A moment on my soapbox
Mondays are errand day around our house. I go to the Post Office, the bank, grocery store and Costco – with a little one, that takes a lot of time and energy. We also managed to make it to the gym this evening, so I felt like the day was a huge success.
It’s funny how your definition of “busy” changes over time. My idea of a productive day is much different than it was a couple of years ago. I am excited if I get a few chores done, fix dinner and squeeze in a nap! Years ago that would have been a lazy day – oh how the tables have turned.
I also once thought that “stay-at-home” moms had all the time in the world… after all, don’t babies sleep all the time? This is just funny to me now. There are so many little things that take up lots of time and energy, and when naptime comes it is hard to motivate yourself to do more than sit on the couch and enjoy the quiet.
All of that said, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I’m very thankful that my husband wants me to be home with our little one. I know many families where that just isn’t the case and the desire for “financial security” is the goal. One income is tough, but there is a different kind of peace that comes when you put family first and enjoy the little things that make life sweet :-).

I started the day very well – got Abby Ruth fed and we headed to the gym. That has been a new addition to our routine this week; we joined our local Rec Center to get in better shape and stay active. Now the challenge is to stick with it!
Abby Ruth did really well today, which is saying something! The first time we brought her, she didn’t move for the entire 45 minutes we were gone! She sat down and held her bunny (that’s her comfort item) and waited for our return. She has done better each time and I think she will eventually enjoy going.
We definitely do NOT have a daredevil for a child – quite the opposite. She is cautious about everything – so much so that it took her 3 months from the time she could stand independently and walk around toys and furniture – to the day she finally stepped out on her own. Even now she dislikes walking on any surface that isn’t completely solid (grass, mulch, gravel) – she will stand in the middle of the yard and whine instead of just walking through the grass. The child doesn’t do anything in a hurry, that’s for sure :-). I’m hoping this means there aren’t many ER visits or broken bones in our future!

For months now I’ve wanted to start a blog – but for one reason or another I’ve put it off. Though I’ve never been good about keeping a journal, I do hope to keep up with this. My purpose is simply to remember the small joys that fill my day – the “little things” that seem insignificant at times but make for sweet memories down the road.
Here’s a little background on me – I’ve been married to my very best friend for almost 7 years. We have an almost 14 month old daughter – Abby Ruth – and a sweet chocolate lab named Zoe. I taught school for 6 years and now stay home with our little one.
My days are filled with making meals, cleaning up the kitchen, playing with Abby Ruth, cleaning up after Abby Ruth, reading stories, running errands, etc. It is amazing how quickly the day goes by and how little is often “accomplished” – but it’s a huge blessing to be able to spend every day with that little monkey :-). Every day Abby Ruth seems to do something new and I can’t imagine missing out on this time in her life – I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
So that’s a little about me for whoever might be interested – now it’s time for bed so I’ll have the energy to do it all again tomorrow :-).
